Introduction to the Ribbon
After starting Financial Genome in Excel 2007 (from Windows/Start menu), you click the FINANCIAL GENOME tab, and then button Financial Genome.
Financial Genome’s interface has three tabs: Home, Model, and Format.
The HOME tab provides quick access to sample projects and guidance.
The MODEL tab is the heart of the program, enabling you to customize the financial model’s time, statements, and rows. “How Do I?” guidance provides contextual help.
Here are the details of the Rows group on the Model tab. “Explain Term” reveals how Financial Genome created the formulas for a given row. “View Inputs” gathers all of the inputs for a given calculated row, making it easy to change values in a what-if analysis. “Reset Forecast Values” provides common methods for initializing inputs for forecast periods. When you insert or duplicate accounts or change the labels, Financial Genome automatically updates all of the formulas in the financial model to maintain consistency and completeness.
The FORMAT tab enables you change the appearance of rows and the sheet. Row formats are saved and reapplied as you edit the financial model. You can also export the financial model into a standalone Excel 2007 workbook for further formatting.

Enter data:

You can enter data directly on any statement where it is referenced and then
have Financial Genome create a database to reuse on other projects. Or,
using Financial Genome Pro Edition, you can import your data directly from and
QuickBooks® 2003 company file. Or, you can map an
existing Excel database workbook (accounts in rows, periods in columns) to the
standard Financial Genome dictionary of financial terms.
FINANCIAL DICTIONARY BROWSER
The Genome Dictionary of Financial Terms contains over 350
financial terms and concepts and eleven customizable financial statements. Using
the Financial Dictionary Browser, you simply insert terms, or financial
statements, on your worksheet.
You can select any term, section or statement for your
analysis at any time:
EXAMPLE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
All Genome Dictionary terms, statements and data inputs are dynamically linked. Calculated terms (i.e. formulas) are derived from their input terms. Data can be input on any statement; all related values are automatically updated. All accounting and financial linkages are built into the knowledge base. As a result, internal consistency and financial integrity are assured.
We created a sample project including these statements:
Income Statement:
Balance Sheet:
Cash Flow Statement:
Ratios Statement:
The underlying financial design is based on viewing
business as a system of operating, investing and financing
cash flows. Ratio analysis and
forecasting drivers are organized using this framework.
This built-in Forecast
Drivers Statement provides all of the assumptions needed for forecasting:
Forecast Drivers Statement:
The identification of any
funding gap provides for financial closure.
CUSTOMIZING YOUR PROJECT
Built-in knowledge utilizing Modernsoft’s patented FinGen technology sets Genome apart from similar applications. Unlike
"hard-wired" templates, you are free to insert any combination of terms onto a statement. Powerful features allow you to
"alias" (rename) terms, "duplicate," "itemize," and manipulate terms in other useful ways. You can generate fully customized statements and analyses. All knowledge is contained in the Dictionary and accompanies the terms; there is no need for you to enter formulas into worksheet cells. You always have access to Excel’s many features (formatting, charting, printing, etc.).
We customized our project by "duplicating" and "aliasing" certain terms and by creating a special statement with key financial measures:
